Nuevo orden (2020) de Michel Franco tiene tan mala reputación en México como en los Estados Unidos la tuvo American Dirt (2020) de Jeanine Cummins. De la película y de la novela se podrían decir las mismas cosas: refrito de situaciones estereotípicas, racismo, misoginia, mala representación, poca inclusión en el reparto, y al mismo tiempo un buen uso de figuras retóricas y cinematográficas, respectivamente. Todas las carencias que uno pueda encontrarle a Nuevo orden, en realidad tienen que ver precisamente con eso que el título evoca y con lo que en un par de ocasiones se nos dice en el filme desde el sonido de fondo de la televisión: la pretendida idea de que en México “hay un nuevo orden” controlando la vida diaria de todos. Así, aunque los créditos también se esfuercen en abrir una “nueva” forma de acomodar las letras, de darle un nuevo orden a las palabras y las cosas, lo cierto es que el nuevo orden de Franco es tan viejo como la idea de lo que ha sido “el orden” en México, al menos. Se cambia de orientación el signo, pero el sentido permanece.
Como las letras de los créditos intentan abrir un “nuevo orden”, así también lo hace la serie de montajes que forman la secuencia que inaugura la película. Cada elemento del montaje, desde un zoom-out de una pintura de Omar Rodríguez-Graham —que también colabora con toda la pintura que se usó en la producción—, hasta los recortes en que Marian —una de los personajes principales del filme— aparece recostada, van seguidos de fundidos. Así, con la cabeza de Rolando, que está despertando frente a su esposa que agoniza en silencio en una cama de hospital, comienza la historia de la película. Los eventos que siguen son un tanto como los recortes del inicio. En la Ciudad de México una “abrupta” insurgencia toma las calles. “Los manifestantes” arrojan pintura verde a los automóviles y también se enfrentan a la policía. Con el furor de la revuelta y la violencia desencadenada, el hospital debe recibir a cientos de personas que llegan heridas y, por tanto, Rolando y su agonizante esposa deben dejar el espacio para que el hospital pueda hacerle frente a la emergencia de malheridos que llegan a torrentes. La esposa de Rolando, que iba a ser operada próximamente —según se nos dice después—, ahora convalece en casa. Su esposo decide ir a pedirle ayuda a la acaudalada familia de Marian, familia para la que él y su esposa trabajaron en algún momento como empleados domésticos, se intuye. Al llegar a la casa, Rolando se topa con la celebración del matrimonio civil de Mariana. A pesar de que la madre de Marian le da algo de dinero a Rolando, pues éste necesita doscientos mil pesos para la operación de su esposa, que ahora será en un hospital privado, la suma no es suficiente. Marian entonces decide tomar su tarjeta de crédito, dejar la boda en suspenso, ir con uno de sus empleados domésticos (Cristian) a la casa de Rolando y así internar a la moribunda mujer. La “solidaridad” y “buenas intenciones” de Marian la sacan de su casa y, así, ella no ve cómo la manifestación irrumpe en su boda, su madre es asesinada, su padre baleado, su casa saqueada por los empleados domésticos y todos los demás invitados tomados como rehenes y luego extorsionados. Lo que sigue de ahí es la pesadilla de la democracia: la totalización del estado como remedio para apaciguar el terror, el caos de unos manifestantes cuyas razones nunca son evidentes.
La distopía de Franco es menos un ejercicio de representación y más un reflejo. Con esto, el totalitarismo del estado en Nuevo orden no va nada alejado a la realidad del país. Como si el cine fuera un espejo, aquello que las luces, texturas y colores que inundan la película van reflejando una figura bastante familiar. Conforme los colores que todo el tiempo van inundando la pantalla, el verde (la pintura que arrojan los manifestantes, el color del logotipo del IMSS en el hospital, los uniformes del ejército), el blanco (las canas de Rolando, el vestido de novia que modela Marian en uno de los primeros montajes que aparecen en el incipit) y el rojo (la sangre, el traje sangre de Marian) se van a unir en la bandera que aparece en la penúltima secuencia de la película. La bandera que ondea en la pantalla y el travelling a manera de zoom-in vuelven ominosa la escena. Los reos vestidos de beige y los tambores que cierran la película marcan el cuadro de la imagen: dentro del rectángulo de la bandera todos los conciudadanos somos como reos.
La monstruosidad del Leviatán radica no tanto en su poder para controlar o disciplinar, sino en que en sus mecanismos el monstruo sujeta, sostiene y también mantiene. Esto es, más que sólo decidir sobre el devenir de las vidas, el soberano coloca a sus “sujetos” en una posición desde la cual desarmar el nudo de su opresión equivale también a desarmar su propia existencia. La fuerza reactiva del estado se mete en la médula, como también se mete en la composición de Nuevo orden. Esto es, mientras que el filme sugeriría una crítica contra los pésimos manejos de la crisis de inseguridad, la violencia y la cada vez más notoria (si es que alguna vez estaba oculta) militarización del poder estatal en México, también la crítica revitaliza la urgencia de volver a maquillar la forma del poder. El sueño del estado es el Nuevo orden, y menos que una distopía, el filme es nuevo nacionalismo.
No hay, entonces, una forma en que el filme, por más que se esfuerce, pueda registrar la siniestra violencia que se ha esparcido por México. Para Nuevo orden ver la violencia desde la estética, desde el cine, sería como alejarse, tomar una perspectiva para ver el marco que sostiene el cuadro. El zoom-out con que inicia la película sugiere que para encontrarle el marco a esa serie de líneas y flujos coloridos —la obra de Omar Rodríguez-Graham— también habría que buscar un marco. El problema es que como la violencia, la obra de Rodríguez-Graham elude la forma y también cualquier marco. El marco es, en realidad, el acto de violencia más fuerte que se hace contra la violencia constitutiva de las líneas que dejan los cuerpos en sus continuos choques entre sí. Desde esta perspectiva, el marco que corta al cuadro de la violencia social en el país, es el nacionalismo, y a su vez, los colores saturados que adornan el marco es Nuevo orden. Franco hace lo opuesto que Cuarón en sus películas ambientadas en México. El primero aparenta hacer un zoom-out de la pintura para denunciar el marco (al estado), pero presenta la violencia desde una perspectiva saturada, en zoom y esa denucnia se convierte en embellecimiento del marco. El segundo, como ya lo ha notado Slavoj Žižek, pone en el fondo de sus películas una violencia siempre dispersa, pero nunca ausente, sólo así es que Cuarón puede registrar de forma oblicua esa violencia siniestra que forma las paredes de la esfera política en México. Mientras que Cuarón desplaza del campo visual del primer plano aquello que sostiene, Franco satura la pantalla. Con todo esto, la única violencia siniestra que el filme, quizá sin proponérselo, registra es el silencio de los manifestantes que irrumpen en la casa de Marian. Ese silencio guarda, como siempre, el límite que expone la parte más constituyente del orden, la violencia, la novedad y el cambio. Sólo desde la fuerza del silencio, tal vez se pueda pensar otras formas de cine y, por su puesto, de país, formas que salgan más de las calles de Polanco y de la Roma.
